Kurogomashio is the most popular furikake in Japan. It is made of two ingredients, roasted black sesame seeds (kuro = black, goma = sesame) and sea salt (shio in Japanese).

The secret of making it lies in the roasting and the quality of the salt used.
Most Japanese people grind this mixture before use so that the natural oil of the sesame absorbs the salt. Ideally, grinding is done in a small sesame seed mill.
